A few of us are getting together to start a Capital Reading Group where we will read through all 3 volumes of Capital (and possibly Grudrisse). Please email me if you would like to be added to the mailing list: firstname.lastname@example.org
The group is a mix of folks who have never read Marx, read some Marx, and a lot of Marx, so no matter what your relationship is with Capital you are absolutely welcome! We will be meeting Sunday evenings at 8pm and expect that each week we will read around 50 pages (selections for each week will be decided at the end of each meeting). Additionally, there will be suggested readings for those of you who would like to do a deeper reading, the suggested readings are 100% optional, and we will be linking to the David Harvey lectures for anyone who would like additional guidance.
Our first meeting will be Sunday July 10th at 8pm at my house 116 Maple St. No. 1 and we will be discussing these 48 pages:
- Grundrisse Foundations of the Critique of Capital, Karl Marx (Penguin Edition), Introduction: Pages 81-111
- Alienation: Marx’s Conception of Man in Capitalist Society, Bertell Ollman, Introduction: Pages 11-15
- Capital A Critique of Political Economy (Penguin Edition) Preface to the First Edition, Postface to the Second Edition: Pages 89-103
Optional: David Harvey Lecture – Reading Marx’s Capital Vol 1 – Class 1, Introduction (I really like this one, he talks about the literary aspects of Capital)
I compiled a zip file of PDFs including the edition of Capital we will be using, the optional material, and the selections for the first meeting. Please email me for the link to the pdfs. If you would like to buy the books many of them are available at Logos or the Literary Guillotine, and the anti-amazon in me suggests buying them from alibris.com if you would like to order them.
hope you’re all having a great summer, and don’t forget to email me if you would like to be added to the list!
